This blog post will provide you with an insight into South East Asia. In particular, we will be looking at Bangkok and Chiang Mai in Thailand, and Hanoi and Hoi An in Vietnam. All of these locations are perfect for backpackers or for anyone who wants to experience a new culture. Thailand Bangkok Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is a great place to throw your self into the culture of south-east Asia. There are multiple modes of transportation in the city, including river taxis and tuk tuks. Both are cheap options that allow you to see a different side of Bangkok. In terms of things to do, a great place to start is the temples, such as the Temple of the Reclining Buddah or ‘Wat Pho’. All visitors must wear shoes covering the feet (not flip-flops), long trousers and have their shoulders covered. However, there is the option to borrow clothes once you arrive if needed. You can simply wander around the temple and its grounds, or audio tour sets can be hired if you’re interested in learning about the temple in more detail. If you are seeking the proper backpack experience then Khao San Road is a must. It is filled with food stalls, clothing shops and bars. If you fancy a more relaxing day, make sure to visit Lumphini Park, where you can find areas to relax in, or hire a pedalo at the lake. If you happen to be in Bangkok for New Year’s Eve, you can see one of the best fireworks displays in the world on the river next to the River City shopping centre. These can be viewed from the shopping centre, or from riverside bars, restaurants, and hotels. Chiang Mai Chiang Mai is located in the north of Thailand among the mountains. It is a great place to immerse yourself in the culture of Thailand. The town itself hosts a range of restaurants and market stalls. There is a great food market, where you can try lots of local food for a very low price. However, it is also a great place to base yourself for going on day trips to the surrounding countryside. For example, one thing that everybody wants to do whilst in Thailand is to see elephants. I would urge you to please not go anywhere that allows you to ride the elephants. Instead, visit a sanctuary like the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary. Here you are able to feed the elephants, swim with them, and give them a mud bath. You’re also likely to meet a baby elephant. Other activities would include quad biking excursions and trips up into the mountains for adventure-type activities like zip-wiring. Vietnam Hanoi Hanoi is located in the north of Vietnam and is home to a bustling old market town, which is great for eating at market stalls, or trying egg coffee in the cafes. Hanoi is also home to numerous temples, along with the famous train line that cuts straight through the narrow streets of the city. From Hanoi, day trips can be taken to Ha Long Bay on the coast of Vietnam. Here you can take boat trips around the bay, and there is also the opportunity to rent kayaks. Hoi an Hoi an is a beautiful town situated further down the country. Here you can walk the streets of the town, which are lined with hosts of lit lanterns in the evenings. Hoi an also offers activities such as walking food tours, cycle tours, or even side car tours. Overall, I hope this blog sparked your imagination as to what Thailand and Vietnam have to offer. There are so many exciting things waiting for you to see and do!
